What is your favorite event with NAWIC?

The annual conference in Portland was everything. I've been to a lot of conferences and often times im bored with the content because its recycled... Pun intended. Dr. Rhianna Rogers and Henry Nutt left a lasting impression on the quality of speakers that are invited to the conference.

What advice do you have for Women who are new in Construction?

Just because you are new doesn't mean you aren't capable. Remind people that because you are new you don't have to unlearn bad habits from poor training. Keep your team accountable.

What is your favorite memory/event with NAWIC or why do you continue participating?

Since joining NAWIC I have attended most every event (chapter, regional and National) and every time I attend I get reenergized and build connections. Those moments keep me motivated and inspired to be in this industry and lead by example. Plus I love doing things with my mom and now my daughter who is a member!

What do you love about working in construction?

I enjoy being on the same level playing ground as everyone. Every connection relating to a project from the Super, to the Safety to the PM  to the Controller is equally as important-- there is no one better than the other and we all work side by side. We are all a team and something new is happening everyday, but the best thing is to say and tell people, "we built that building!" and see the completed  project.

Anything else you would like women to know about NAWIC?

Speaking up for ourselves is hard.. but when you surround yourself with other women who have your back, it helps our confidence and our strength to get through tough obstacles that we may face. NAWIC is a safe circle! We encourage one another to get through anything that comes our way - We wont let any of us fail.. and if we do... we are all there to pick one another up and start again!

Sarah Thorvund works at Wall and Ceiling Alliance (also known as WACA) as a Technical Coordinator. She has worked in the industry for five years and have been a member of NAWIC for 1 year and a member of our Board of Directors.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I believe in the power and unity of women.  NAWIC brings a unique perspective and valuable contributions to the industry. Here are a few reasons why they are special to me:

 1. Diversity and inclusivity: Women increase diversity in the construction sector, promoting a more inclusive and well-rounded work environment. Their different experiences, skills, and approaches can lead to fresh ideas and innovative solutions.

 2. Skills and expertise: Women in construction possess a wide range of skills and expertise, spanning from project management and engineering to design and architecture. Their knowledge and capabilities contribute to the overall success of construction projects.

3. Collaboration and communication: Women often excel in collaboration and communication, which are crucial skills in construction. Their ability to foster teamwork, negotiate, and build strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders can enhance project coordination and efficiency.

4. Attention to detail and precision: Women are known for their attention to detail and precision, which are vital traits in construction. Their meticulousness helps ensure accurate measurements, quality workmanship, and adherence to safety standards.

5. Role models and inspiration: Women in construction serve as role models for future generations, inspiring young girls and women to pursue careers in the industry. By breaking barriers and overcoming challenges, they encourage others to follow their passions and contribute to the field.

It is important to recognize and appreciate the unique qualities and contributions that women bring to the construction sector, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and successful industry for everyone involved.

What is your favorite event with NAWIC?

Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon was an exhilarating experience for me. Walking into a room of nearly six hundred powerful women gave me an unexplainable feeling. Hearing different  stories and experiences and how they all prevailed is why I will continue to participate.

What advice do you have for Women who are new?

If you're new to the construction industry, I would say congratulations on choosing such a dynamic and rewarding field! I would also say:

1. Educate yourself: Familiarize yourself with the construction industry by gaining knowledge about different aspects such as project management, safety protocols, and construction techniques. Attend workshops, take courses, or pursue a degree in construction-related fields. This will provide a strong foundation for your career.

2. Build a strong support network: Connect with other women in the construction industry through professional organizations, networking events, and online communities. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can offer support, guidance, and inspiration. Additionally, seek out mentors who can provide valuable advice based on their experience.

3. Be proactive and enthusiastic: Show a genuine interest in learning and taking on new challenges. Be proactive in seeking out opportunities to develop your skills and take on additional responsibilities. Demonstrating enthusiasm and a willingness to learn will help you stand out and advance in your career.

4. Develop strong communication skills: Effective communication is crucial in the construction industry. Be clear, concise, and confident in your interactions with colleagues, clients, and contractors. Strong communication skills will help you build relationships, resolve conflicts, and ensure projects run smoothly.

5. Embrace hands-on experience: Take advantage of any opportunities to gain practical, hands-on experience. Participate in on-site visits, volunteer for construction projects, or shadow experienced professionals. This will not only enhance your knowledge but also provide you with valuable insights into the construction process.

6. Focus on safety: Construction sites can be hazardous environments, so prioritize safety at all times. Familiarize yourself with safety protocols and regulations, and adhere to them strictly. Take advantage of any safety training programs available to you.

Remember, your gender should never limit your potential in the construction industry. Be confident, resilient, and persistent in pursuing your goals. With dedication and hard work, you can thrive and make a significant impact in the construction field. Best of luck on your journey!

What do you love about working in construction?

I am intrigued with the continuing development and education of construction. My grandfather would never believe that you can review plans with technology and not just paper. I feel like I need another ten more years to grasp the world of Construction.

Anything else you would like folks to know about you or NAWIC?

I have never felt more empowered since I joined NAWIC. The energy women bring when gathering is truly a magnificent experience. NAWIC has made me want to continue my education and has introduced me to all sides of the trades. Construction has amazing opportunities for all genders. NAWIC shows you what those opportunities are. If there are women out there that like to drive boats, motorcycles, and are comfortable with getting behind the seat of any size truck they could very well have a successful career as a heavy equipment operator. NAWIC introduces women to all trades!

Alyanna Espina works as a Project Manager at Bell Electrical Supply. She has been a member since October 2021 and currently on the Board of Directors. She has been working in the construction industry for over 5 years.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I joined NAWIC to network and make meaningful connections with like-minded women in Silicon Valley. I wanted to learn more about women's different roles and work in the industry. My job in electrical distribution is only a tiny sliver of the pie, and I wanted to see the bigger picture from peers with more industry experience. When you hear of construction, most people don't automatically think of women; the goal of NAWIC is to change that view!

Why do you keep participating with NAWIC?

I enjoy participating because of the personal and professional relationships I've gained in NAWIC. It is a fantastic organization; everyone is supportive and eager to help. I look forward to our monthly workshops and learning best practices from experts in the industry. Not only that, but we also like to have fun! My favorite event was the vision board-making night at Daley's Drywall this past January.

What do you love about working in construction?

It's a vast industry with many avenues for growth and opportunities. I love working with people from different walks of life. Plus, it's super cool to see a structure being built, knowing that you were part of the process.

Anything else you want to share about yourself personally?

I love being active! Whether it's hiking, running, practicing yoga, or lifting weights. This winter season, I learned how to ski. On one of my snow trips, I ran into one of our members, Amy Pacheco! I also love cooking and gardening.

My favorite memory was the first NAWIC meeting I was invited to, I felt welcomed and happy to meet members with similar career paths and experiences. I continue to participate as a venue to network and to learn from other members in how we can support other women in construction.

Aside from an interest in construction, I enjoy creative hobbies such as baking, party decorating, and other miscellaneous skills that I've acquired as a mom.

Member Spotlight - Amy Pacheco

Amy is the Controller at O.C. McDonald. She has been a member of NAWIC for 2 years and has been working in the construction industry for 15 years.

Why did you join NAWIC?

Three years ago I was hired at O.C. McDonald Co., bringing me to the South Bay for the first time in my career. I'm an East Bay native. A few women at OCM were NAWIC members and recommended that I join. I couldn't be happier! This has been a great experience to meet new people in Silicon Valley, explore the area, and expand my overall network.

What is your favorite event(s) with NAWIC?

I loved the job walk at Stanford Hospital, and the Bluebeam training session. As the Controller at my company, I'm familiar with all these names (job sites, software programs, etc.), but I rarely get outside the office to see it first-hand. I am also amazed to see women working in every facet of construction.

What advice do you have for Women who are new in Construction?

Become an expert in your field. Take on well-defined professional roles/titles as soon as possible, and be the best! This might involve taking classes, getting a mentor, and taking opportunities to showcase your knowledge. This is how you carve your niche. This is how people learn who you are and respect your boundaries. The unfortunate reality is that many people see women in supporting roles only. If you don't take charge of your own career development, people assume you are only there to support them. They offload their work on you, which wastes your time and detracts from your own growth. The best thing you can do is set your boundaries, develop yourself professionally, demand respect at all times, and don't volunteer for things that don't serve your personal growth.

What do you love about working in construction?

I come from a union construction family, so I feel I'm in the right place. My mom was, and sister is, an IBEW electrician. I work in the office, but it is still gratifying to know that I work in the same field as these strong women in my family. I might have joined the trades if not for a back injury I had as a teen. So I went to college and landed right where I belong - in construction! It just makes sense.

Anything else you would like other members to know about you?

I love snowboarding, backpacking, running - basically anything outdoors! I think it's important to keep our bodies in motion, especially if you sit all day like I do. Find something outside of work/housework that makes you happy, and do more of that!

Member Spotlight - Monica Sanchez

Monica is the Founder at Proven Connnections Group. She has worked in the construction industry for 7 years and been a member of NAWIC for 4 years. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I knew first-hand that industry educational organizations were vital to my professional and personal growth. I belonged to a gas and oil industry organization for 11 years and was on the National Board. Once I transitioned over to the construction industry, I knew I had to join NAWIC. I have made great connections, continue to learn, and being part of the Board allows me to direct my professional growth. I love the opportunities to network with other women in all aspects of our industry. Most of our experiences can be unique but at the same time we can relate as well. I enjoy sharing information about NAWIC to women I interact with through my business.

What do you love about working in construction?

I love to problem solve, so my construction projects allow me to show case my ability to come up with different solutions to an issue, but most importantly how our preplanning can avoid or minimize any issues. Seeing a project to an idea to completion is very rewarding knowing that my experience/expertise added value to the project.

Why do you continue participating with NAWIC?

The personal and professional relationships I have built - they have become a valuable support group. I can reach out for professional advice. Now that I have my own company, I had contract and accounting questions and I was given direction by a few members. I met a student and her mom at one of the meetings and I have become a mentor for her and a friend to her mom. The connections are real!

I learned about this amazing organization from co-workers and my company, as Rosendin is a sponsor of NAWIC.

What has been your favorite event or meeting with NAWIC?

I've really loved all the jobsite walks I've been able to participate in since joining. Because I work on the corporate side of construction, I rarely get the chance to see the actual action of building things. It's pretty neat to be able to see construction sites up close.

Anything else?

NAWIC has been a great place for me to grow my network and I am thrilled by all the wonderful women I have been able to meet. Rosendin has also taken a page from NAWIC's book and we are starting our own construction camp for kids! I really enjoyed being a camp counselor last summer for the Austin's Chapter CAMP NAWIC and I hope to continue my work with the younger generation.

I joined NAWIC to meet like minded women who want to make a change in a male dominated industry. I also enjoy the networking and love the events. I'm here to learn and better myself as a woman in construction and as an individual.

Why do you continue participating?

I continue to participate because of the women. Women who have been in the industry and in NAWIC for 10+ years who help guide me and educate me. But most of all they push me to do better and be stronger.

Anything else?

When I joined NAWIC I lacked self confidence. I have become a self proclaimed successful woman. I can attribute part of that to my time with NAWIC.

My favorite event was the Charter Dinner Missy Cochran and I planned to commemorate a year of missed holidays due to COVID. It was so much fun to brainstorm ideas and then to put on a great party!

What advice do you have for Women who are new in Construction?

I would advise those who are new to construction to work for a small-ish company where you'll be required to work way too much and wear many different hats. As your career progresses, you tend to get more focused and it's more difficult to get exposed to other areas that may interest you.

Anything else you want to share?

I am so glad I got involved with NAWIC! I enjoy all the behind-the-scenes work we have been doing and look forward to being part of a growing chapter! I grew up in Utah and moved to California in 2008 with my husband Sam and one-year-old daughter, Elisabeth. In 2012, my son Asher joined the crew and is the only native Californian in our family. We have enjoyed living in both southern and northern California and have nine moves under our belt. Recently, I've been trying to garden but haven't had much success. I've also learned to quilt and have collected so much fabric it takes up half my closet!

I knew that by joining I would be able to continue my success in the industry while growing in NAWIC. Then I decided to join the Board because I knew this community is one full of great women with great potential, where it's crucial to support one another in an industry that is dominated by men.

What are you most excited about in Construction?
Technology is advancing, making things more exciting! We have gone from hand drawings to computer drawings/2D renderings to 3D and 4D printing, to virtual reality.
